Premier League winner says David Moyes almost signed him at Everton, but he chose Joleon Lescott instead

David Moyes no doubt had some transfer blunders and this was certainly one of them.

The Scotsman will be hoping he pretty much excels with every signing he makes in his second spell for Everton.

Carlos Alcaraz has been hit-and-miss so far, as Moyes is trying to find the right position for the Argentine, but Moyes won’t play Alcaraz on the wing after the West Ham draw.

He’s hoping he’ll smash every transfer out of the park, but unfortunately at Everton, it doesn’t work that way.

Someone who he did succeed with was Joleon Lescott, but another option was waiting in the wings who went on to win the Premier League.

Robert Huth almost joined Everton under David Moyes

It might not have been a luxurious signing back then, but Huth turned out to be a vital component of Claudio Ranieri’s Premier League-winning season with Leicester City.

The Everton manager has a keen eye for talent, but probably never expected the German to go to win the Premier League.

His keen eye remains in his second spell as Moyes wants Tom Fellows at Everton, as the winger looks promising and won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to bring him to the club like Huth.

But Moyes did miss his chance to sign the German in 2006, as the centre-back looked promising coming through Chelsea’s academy.

Speaking to the Artiphact podcast, Huth explained the strange scenario that lead to Lescott joining Everton over him.

“I was on a plane back from Berlin to London and he (Moyes) rang me just as the plane accelerated,” Huth said.

“I knew it was him and said, ‘listen I’m just about to take off.

“He hung up, and by the time I landed, he signed Joleon Lescott.

“It would’ve been great to play for Everton.”

Moyes made up for Huth howler with Lescott signing

As bad as missing out on a future Premier League winner is, Lescott wasn’t bad business at all.

For the small price of £2 million, the England international was an absolute bargain.

The centre-back was a stalwart in his four seasons at Everton, as Lescott picked Everton over Arsenal, even with the Gunners at their peak.

Not only was he defensively sound, Lescott notched up an impressive 17 goals from defence, and the Toffees got a decent fee of £22 million at the time from Man City as well.

So they missed out on what could’ve been a career-changing move for Huth, but the backup in Lescott wasn’t a bad substitute in the slightest.
