Leeds United boss Daniel Farke says Brenden Aaronson has overcome his ‘poorer period’ after an ‘excellent’ showing against Millwall.
Leeds United got back to winning ways on Wednesday night as they defeated Millwall on home turf. LUFC ran out 2-0 winners, bouncing back from the defeat to Portsmouth at the weekend.
A Jake Cooper own goal opened the scoring after three minutes before Ao Tanaka wrapped up the win five minutes from time. It sees the Whites restore their lead at the top of the Championship table with a two-point lead over Sheffield United.
Despite the call for changes, only one alteration was made to Daniel Farke’s starting XI. Brenden Aaronson started in attacking midfield again, despite a lot of minutes and some questionable form.
However, Leeds United boss Farke has voiced his backing for the American ace amid criticism from supporters.
As quoted by Leeds Live, the LUFC chief labelled Aaronson as ‘excellent’ against Millwall though acknowledged he has had a ‘poorer period’. He said:
“He is always excellent, he was excellent today. His best performance in recent weeks.
“Should have got an assist today. Not perfect but he has overcome his poorer period.”
Farke’s man for the no. 10 role
Leeds United have a wealth of talented attacking players, so there have been calls for someone else to be given a chance in attacking midfield.
Aaronson was on the bench for the first two games of the 2024/25 season but has started all 35 since. With no goal contributions since the start of February, there have been calls for the likes of Wilfried Gnonto or Largie Ramazani to be given a chance.
However, Farke has made it clear, both with his words and team selection, that Aaronson retains his firm backing for the no. 10 role in his side.
A quick turnaround
Fresh off the back of the 2-0 win over Millwall, Leeds United make the quick turnaround and head south on Saturday to face QPR.
The Rs are on a run of four consecutive defeats, so LUFC will be big favourites to big up three points.
Afterwards, the Whites have a welcome two-week break between then and the next game at the end of the month. The likes of Aaronson, who have played a lot of football and haven’t been called up to international duty, will have a welcome chance to recharge and rest.
