Kevin Thelwell is set to part ways with Everton, and Dan Ashworth has been linked to the vacant role.
The English football director is currently out of work following his most recent tenure at Manchester United, where he served as sporting director for five months before departing in December 2024.
The Friedkin Group is seriously considering Ashworth for the position at Everton.
TBR Football journalist Graeme Bailey told everton.news that Ashworth is a “genuine” contender for the role. Though he has been associated with a move to Goodison Park recently, Thelwell’s expected departure has prompted the American owners to intensify their search for a replacement.
The club’s hierarchy is even contemplating a different approach, potentially forgoing a direct replacement in favor of entrusting David Moyes with responsibility for key signings.
David Weir, currently at Brighton, was initially seen as the Friedkin Group’s top target, but it is now unlikely he will make the move to Merseyside, forcing the owners to explore other options.
The Toffees may find success with the appointment of Dan Ashworth.
Ashworth could be an ideal fit for Everton as they embark on a new chapter under the Friedkin Group’s ownership. With an impressive track record at Brighton and Newcastle, Ashworth is renowned for creating structured, sustainable football operations—exactly what Everton needs after years of mismanagement.
His astute recruitment skills, which demonstrate his ability to identify talent aligned with a club’s vision, could help rejuvenate Everton’s squad ahead of their upcoming move to Bramley-Moore Dock.
Ashworth’s career includes roles at:
Manchester United (2024) – Sporting Director
Newcastle (2022-2024) – Sporting Director
Brighton (2019-2022) – Technical Director
England (2013-2018) – Director of Development
West Brom (2007-2013) – Sporting Director
His time with the English FA also equips him to build a strong youth system, crucial for the club’s long-term success.
Despite a brief and turbulent stint at Manchester United, Ashworth’s reputation for establishing high standards and improving club culture remains intact.
For the Toffees, who are in desperate need of stability and ambition, Ashworth’s strategic expertise and Premier League experience could make him a transformative figure to lead the club forward.
