After the controversy against Manchester United, Everton have now got a big game coming up at Brentford who are a team who are flying and full of confidence right now but then our striker Beto has now scored five goals in his last five games.
Beto has been a changed man since David Moyes came in. Listening to his interviews, I don’t think he liked the way that Sean Dyche shouted and screamed at him.
Dyche used to be very animated on the touchline and if Beto didn’t make that run down the line like Dominic Calvert-Lewin, the former manager’s arms would be up in the air. I’ve said it many times, when you’re playing catch-up after not being a regular in the side, players need a run of games before we can truly judge them.
You can see Beto’s willingness to be part of the football club and put that blue shirt on, it oozes out of him. What we want to see is his ability and can we see improvement week on week?
He’s having a good go and getting across defenders with headers. He was attacking balls into the box against Manchester United but although it went straight down the keeper’s throat a couple of times, he’s also there to put the ball into the net and he’s doing that right now which will give him huge confidence to keep going.
That gives him that extra 10% to chase down lost causes. When you’re not getting rewarded, it’s difficult to do that and under Dyche, we weren’t playing to his strengths and were just pinging balls in towards him.
Beto has had a difficult time since he came to the football club with a manager who didn’t seem to really like his style but Moyes has come in and put an arm around his shoulder. He’s the manager’s only option up front right now but Beto has reacted to that, speaking to him on a personal level, one to one, to learn what Moyes wants from him and implementing it.
He’s causing opposition defenders nightmares because he’s strong and physical. He’s also tucking those chances away in a casual manner and he’s found the half shoulder and the half turn when running towards goal.
As a fan, that’s great when you’ve got such confidence in your striker that he’s going to find the net. Too many times in the past, we’ve had players going through one-on-one and you’re not sure whether they’re even going to hit the target, never mind score a goal.
Beto has brought that confidence back. We’re confident he’ll find the net in such situations and while he’s had help from Moyes and the coaching staff, he’s taken it on board himself and the shirt is there for him to keep if he retains these levels.
Many of these players have played a lot of minutes in a short space of time and while Everton have got a couple of breaks coming up, we’ve got to try and get something in London again against Thomas Frank’s side after beating Crystal Palace 2-1 on our previous trip to the capital in our last away game.
Abdoulaye Doucoure showed against Manchester United why Moyes put him straight back in. His legs and his attitude to start the press and force the issue enable him to play two positions in one because of his work ethic.
Carlos Alcaraz has got more finesse and is clever in the final third, driving into the box near the end and causing issues before the penalty incident. It’s a bit of a headache for David but maybe he could find a way to play both of them, that would be something of a surprise element.
I don’t think new Everton hero liked Sean Dyche approach – David Moyes talks have changed him
