Leeds United have been cautioned against signing Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson due to concerns about his injury history.
Wilson’s contract with Newcastle expires this summer, and both Championship clubs Leeds United and Coventry City are reportedly interested in the 31-year-old. However, his injury struggles during his time on Tyneside have raised doubts for Football League World’s Leeds United pundit about the suitability of a move to Elland Road.
Leeds will need reinforcements up front if they secure promotion to the Premier League
Leeds United are aiming for a return to the Premier League after falling short in last season’s play-offs, losing 1-0 to Southampton at Wembley. Under Daniel Farke, Leeds are currently in a tight battle for the two automatic promotion spots in the Championship, with a crucial match against Sunderland tonight. With their strong form this season, Leeds supporters are growing hopeful about a promotion.
When asked by FLW about the speculation surrounding Callum Wilson, Leeds fan pundit Joe Blackburn agreed that the club would need more attacking options in the top flight but expressed doubts about the Newcastle striker being the right choice.
He commented: “Leeds will obviously need at least one striker if they’re promoted, especially since Patrick Bamford is likely to leave due to his injury struggles. Mateo Joseph might also benefit from a Championship loan, as he’s talented but not yet consistent enough.
“Signing Callum Wilson on a free transfer could seem like a smart move, as he would only cost wages. But the problem is, he’s very injury-prone at the moment, much like Bamford.”
Concerns over Callum Wilson’s injury record compared to Patrick Bamford
Blackburn further explained why Leeds should avoid Wilson, highlighting his ongoing hamstring problems at Newcastle. He drew parallels between Wilson and Bamford, who has faced a series of injuries since Leeds returned to the Championship.
Blackburn continued: “It would be strange to replace an injury-prone player like Bamford with another injury-prone player in Wilson. He clearly has the quality to be a top-half Premier League striker, as seen with his 18 goals for Newcastle a couple of seasons ago.
“The issue, however, is that he’s rarely fit enough to perform consistently. For a team like Leeds, aiming for Premier League survival, they would need players who can hit the ground running and deliver results regularly.
“Wilson would struggle with that, and he’d likely command higher wages. Is it worth investing in someone who can’t deliver? I don’t think so—he’s a player to avoid.”
