‘I just think’: Andy Thompson says ‘relentless’ Wolves star has never once disappointed him since he signed

Andy Thompson has praised one Wolves player, highlighting that the youngster has never failed to impress him since joining the club.

Wolves secured their place in the FA Cup fifth-round draw after defeating Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at Ewood Park on Sunday, with goals from Joao Gomes and Matheus Cunha.

Although Wolves initially struggled to find their rhythm, they eventually produced a confident performance, and the scoreline could have been even more convincing. However, they did get a bit lucky when a Blackburn goal was disallowed for offside, with no VAR to overturn the decision.

Several Wolves players impressed in Lancashire, including Marshall Munetsi, who made a positive debut after coming on midway through the second half, and Emmanuel Agbadou, whose solid form since his move from Reims continued to be praised by Chris Sutton.

After the match, Andy Thompson singled out another standout player for special praise.

Andy Thompson hails ‘relentless’ Rodrigo Gomes after Wolves’ FA Cup win over Blackburn

Many Wolves fans were excited to see Rodrigo Gomes back in the starting lineup for the FA Cup tie against Blackburn. Since Vitor Pereira’s arrival at Molineux, the young Portuguese talent has become one of the team’s key performers. Pereira has often said that Rodrigo is a player for the present—a view not shared by former manager Gary O’Neil—and the midfielder seems to be thriving with more game time.

In the match against Blackburn, Rodrigo played as a left wing-back and was exceptional throughout. In the first half, he focused more on defensive duties, crucially stopping a dangerous breakaway by Blackburn’s Amario Cozier-Duberry when he appeared to be outpaced. In the second half, Rodrigo was a constant attacking outlet and nearly assisted Munetsi’s debut goal.

Thompson was particularly impressed with Rodrigo, calling him Wolves’ best player on the day and noting that he has been consistently impressed by the former Braga man. Speaking on Matchday Live Extra, Thompson said: “I thought he had another good game. He gives us that energy. I haven’t been disappointed by him this year yet. He just keeps going. He’s relentless in his work and always available for the ball, plus he’s a willing runner.”

Rodrigo Gomes: A future star at Wolves

It’s hard to ignore how underused Rodrigo was in the first half of the season under O’Neil, considering his recent performances. Pereira has been spot-on in giving him more opportunities, as Rodrigo is not just a player for now, but someone who can become a real fan favorite at Molineux.

Rodrigo’s work rate is exceptional, and he also offers an attacking threat, making him an invaluable asset to the team. His versatility is a huge plus for Pereira, and at this rate, Rodrigo could soon become undroppable—a development many Wolves fans would fully support.
