Questions were understandably raised following Albion’s 7-0 loss at Nottingham Forest, though some calls for Hurzeler’s dismissal seemed a bit hasty.
The German coach made mistakes at the City Ground, particularly with Jack Hinshelwood playing as a lone midfielder without proper support. However, he showed growth with a much-improved approach against Chelsea.
The return of Carlos Baleba proved crucial, as his presence steadied the midfield, helping the Seagulls dominate large portions of the match.
Georginio Rutter and Kaoru Mitoma scored superb goals, leading to a memorable comeback win after Bart Verbruggen’s early mistake in the fifth minute – the only blemish on an otherwise flawless performance. It was also Albion’s first home victory since November.
Post-match, Hurzeler told ITV: “I’m really proud of how we bounced back from a tough loss. I’m proud of how they stuck together. It’s crucial not to overreact to setbacks. I remained calm and we analyzed the reasons.”
Speaking to BBC Sport, he added: “Great response. We showed character after that rough start. I’m proud of how they came back. It wasn’t easy, which is why it was well-earned. There was a real sense of togetherness on the pitch. It was a team performance. They stuck together, didn’t point fingers after the loss, and took ownership.
“We always aim to stay grounded and work hard. We try not to get overly excited after a win or panic after a loss. Football is all about bouncing back. It’s not always an upward trajectory – there are downs as well. In life, a successful journey isn’t always a comfortable one.”
