‘Ridiculous’ – Graham Smyth rages at Sky & ITV development over upcoming Leeds game

Leeds United fans have followed their team far and wide for decades, but the increasing costs of tickets and the demands of TV broadcasters have made it harder to do so.

This season, the Whites have filled Elland Road and travelled in their thousands across the country, as their team climbs to the top of the Championship.

Now, one of their longest away trips of the year has been moved to a Sunday noon kick-off for Sky Sports and ITV, when they face Portsmouth at Fratton Park on 9 March.

As expected, there has been a backlash from fans, especially since Pompey supporters had to travel early for the reverse fixture at Elland Road on the opening weekend (10 August), which also kicked off at 12:30 pm, ending in a 3-3 draw.

Graham Smyth condemns TV decision

Graham Smyth has heavily criticised Sky and ITV for jointly scheduling the match between Leeds and Portsmouth for Sunday 9 March at noon.

This will be only the third time in 20 years that Portsmouth has hosted a home game at this early time, and the first time they’ve had fans present for a northern club’s visit.

Smyth took to X to express his frustration, writing: “Football is for the fans. Not the fans who attend matches, don’t be ridiculous and selfish. Now, get to Portsmouth for a Sunday morning game and make an atmosphere that sounds good on TV.”

The game has been picked up by TV broadcasters, with both teams expected to be fighting for Championship glory.

Daniel Farke’s Leeds side is relentlessly pushing for Premier League promotion, while Portsmouth, in their first season back in the second tier, are aiming to remain there for the long term.

Leeds fans will still be there

Although Farke’s team will likely travel down on Saturday and stay nearby, many Leeds supporters will have to set off well before dawn.

To account for any potential travel delays, coach departures could be as early as 3 am. It’s just the reality for match-going fans.

Despite the inconvenience, the atmosphere at Fratton Park is expected to be electric, in one of the most anticipated Championship fixtures of the season, which TV networks have recognised.

Whether it’s the rising ticket prices or inconvenient TV schedules, match-going fans often feel like an afterthought in the rush to attract new audiences, much like in many other industries.
