‘It has been tough’: Joe Rothwell discusses if he will be at Leeds United next season

Few could have predicted how impactful Joe Rothwell would be for Leeds United since his arrival on loan from Bournemouth.

The experienced midfielder joined on a season-long loan as one of Daniel Farke’s first signings in the summer, but the move was met with mixed reactions from Leeds fans, who questioned whether he would strengthen the squad.

This was despite Rothwell’s considerable Championship experience and his Premier League move to Bournemouth. Even his four goals in a half-season at Southampton failed to convince many.

However, Farke believes Rothwell has proved the doubters wrong, and the German manager is right. The set-piece specialist has been outstanding in midfield, adding a new dimension to Leeds’ play.

Joe Rothwell Discusses His Leeds United Future Beyond His Loan

With 16 games remaining in the Championship season, it’s unclear what the future holds for Rothwell. He has 18 months left on his Bournemouth contract, reportedly worth £30,000 a week.

In an interview on Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet’s deadline-day special, Rothwell admitted he isn’t sure whether he will remain at Elland Road after his loan ends, especially with Leeds’ league status still undecided for next season.

“This loan has been tough because I’ve moved up without my family, and my kids are still in school. It wasn’t just a simple case of bringing them with me since I’m uncertain about what’s coming next season,” Rothwell explained. “I decided with my wife that I’d leave them for now, and it’s been tough not seeing them as much as I’d like. But we knew it was a sacrifice. Hopefully, next season, we’ll be reunited.”

“It’s gone as well as it could have; it took some time, but once I got the chance, I knew I could show what I’m capable of. It’s gone better than I expected. Who knows what will happen next season?”

What Graeme Bailey Said About a Permanent Joe Rothwell Deal

It’s unclear what fee Bournemouth would demand for Rothwell, considering they signed him on a free from Blackburn. This is his second loan spell away from The Cherries, and a permanent transfer fee is unlikely to be significant.

Leeds may also use potential add-ons or installments related to deals for Tyler Adams or Luis Sinisterra to sweeten the offer. But the question remains: do Leeds want to sign Rothwell permanently this summer?

Graeme Bailey told LeedsUnited.News that promotion is crucial if Leeds want to secure Rothwell on a permanent deal. However, if Leeds fail to gain promotion, it’s very possible that Rothwell would still be keen to make the move permanent.
