Better than Bielsa: Leeds United taking title-winning strides under Daniel Farke

Leeds United demonstrated their superiority once again with a performance that utterly dismantled Cardiff City. The Welsh side simply couldn’t cope with the threat posed by Daniel Farke’s LUFC.

Despite adopting a defensive approach, often with their entire team in their own half, Omer Riza’s side were powerless to stop Farke’s men from running riot in front of a jubilant crowd at Elland Road. It was one of Leeds United’s most commanding victories this season.

The goals from Brenden Aaronson, Manor Solomon, Dan James, Joel Piroe (2), Willy Gnonto, and Mateo Joseph highlighted the dominance, but the overall performance was a relentless demolition from start to finish.

LUFC’s Dominance on Full Display

Leeds United steamrolled Cardiff City in front of nearly 36,000 fans on Saturday afternoon. The Welsh visitors had little chance to catch their breath as Farke’s side relentlessly attacked at every opportunity.

Though they didn’t monopolize possession, Leeds constantly pressed forward, gradually reducing Cardiff to a disjointed outfit. A 2-0 lead at halftime was a testament to LUFC’s attacking prowess, and the second half was a non-stop display of pace and power.

Had it not been for Cardiff’s goalkeeper, Jack Alnwick, the scoreline could have easily reached double figures, with Leeds registering 29 shots, 12 of which were on target.

Better Than Bielsa’s Leeds?

There’s little doubt that Leeds United’s current team is playing better football than under the legendary Marcelo Bielsa. Their attacking threat is incisive, capable of cutting through opposition defenses at will.

Bielsa’s teams were known for pressing high, winning the ball in tight spaces, and transitioning quickly from defense to attack. Farke’s side shares these attributes, but with an added emphasis on a rock-solid defense. While Bielsa’s approach often leaned toward outscoring opponents, Farke’s system has a more balanced and pragmatic edge, making it harder for teams to break through.

Against Cardiff, it was clear that the Bluebirds were overpowered, and to be fair, no Championship team could have lived with Leeds’ dominance. It was a perfect, dominant display.

Championship Contenders?

Sitting atop the Championship table, two points clear of Sheffield United, Leeds have a five-point cushion over third-place Burnley. After March 24th, they won’t face another top-four team for the rest of the season.

With 16 games remaining, Farke’s team has accumulated 63 points, scored 60 goals, and boasts an impressive goal difference of +41. No other team has come close to matching this output.

Next up is mid-table Coventry City, who will need to find a way to cope with Leeds’ attacking prowess. Sitting back and hoping for a counter is risky, but an open approach will surely be punished.

It’s not just Saturday’s demolition of Cardiff that marks Leeds as title contenders. Their form all season has suggested that Daniel Farke’s side are truly the champions-in-waiting for this Championship campaign.
