Daniel Farke has given his strongest indication yet that Leeds United may be on the verge of making a new signing before the January transfer window closes in just under a week.
At the start of the window, Farke had suggested it would be a quiet month for the club. However, in a press conference last Thursday ahead of Monday’s match against Burnley, he hinted that new signings could be in the works.
Farke has previously expressed a desire to add three players—a no. 10, a striker, and a centre-back. With just six days remaining in the transfer window, Leeds are yet to make any confirmed moves to bolster their squad for their promotion push.
Leeds extended their unbeaten run to 12 games on Monday with a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Burnley, a result that was expected given Burnley’s solid defensive record. Farke spoke to the media following the match.
While Farke is known for being tight-lipped about transfer activity, he suggested that Leeds could be on the brink of a deal in the coming days. When asked about potential moves, he remarked that he hadn’t checked his phone for six hours, adding that there might be an update soon.
Quoted by The Athletic’s new Leeds reporter Beren Cross, Farke said: “I haven’t checked my phone for the last six hours. I’ll check it after this press conference; maybe I can tell you more [about transfers] then.”
As for potential signings, reports indicate that Aston Villa’s Emi Buendia is no longer a target for Leeds, as the Argentine is set to join Bayer Leverkusen on loan with an option for a permanent move.
However, Leeds have been linked with a surprise move for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the England international currently at Besiktas in Turkey, although he has made just six appearances this season.
Additionally, journalist Graham Smyth dismissed claims that Leeds were close to signing Kelechi Iheanacho, who is currently at struggling Sevilla under Victor Orta. Another name in the mix is St. Gallen striker Willem Geubbels, who has also been rumored to be on Leeds’ radar.
