The January transfer window is entering its final week, and it’s been a relatively quiet one for Newcastle United.
Despite frequent rumors suggesting possible departures and arrivals at St James’ Park, Eddie Howe’s first-team squad remains largely unchanged since the window opened. That said, the club has still made some moves. Four players have left on loan, with Isaac Hayden joining Portsmouth for the remainder of the season. Highly-rated defenders Alex Murphy and Charlie McArthur are spending the rest of the campaign with Bolton Wanderers and Carlisle United, respectively, while midfielder Travis Hernes is gaining experience with Aalborg in Denmark. But could there be more movement before the window closes?
Could leave: Jamie Miley
The 21-year-old midfielder impressed in pre-season and earned a loan spell with Newport County, where he made eight appearances. Now back at Newcastle, there’s speculation that Hartlepool United may be interested in him, with both loan and permanent deals being considered.
Stay: Callum Wilson
Wilson has been linked with moves to clubs like Atletico Madrid and AC Milan in the past year, but Howe is counting on him for backup and competition for Alexander Isak. A summer exit when his contract expires seems more likely.
Could leave: Ben Parkinson
The 19-year-old academy product made a single senior appearance in November 2023 but has seen little first-team action since. After scoring seven goals in ten league appearances for the Under-21s, Parkinson could be sent out on loan.
Stay: William Osula
Despite bizarre rumors linking Osula to Austrian side Sturm Graz, it’s clear that the young forward will remain at St James’ Park for the rest of the season, continuing to earn game-time as a substitute.
Could leave: Garang Kuol
The young Australian has struggled to make an impact since joining Newcastle, with loan spells at Hearts and Volendam yielding limited success. However, after recent good performances for the Under-21s, he could be loaned out again to help kickstart his career.
Stay: Kieran Trippier
Trippier has been linked with moves to Bayern Munich, Serie A, and the Saudi Pro League, but the England international is under contract until 2026 and is expected to stay at Newcastle until at least the end of the current season. Any potential move is more likely to happen in the summer.
Could leave: Matt Targett
Targett has struggled with injuries since his permanent move to Newcastle, and with Lewis Hall impressing this season, his chances of playing have diminished. A good offer could lead to a sale before the deadline.
Stay: Lewis Miley
There have been rumors that Miley could go out on loan, but he’s a favorite of Howe’s and is expected to play an important role for the remainder of the season.
Could leave: Sean Longstaff
Longstaff has been linked with moves to Everton and Leeds United, and Newcastle recently triggered an extension to prevent him from leaving for free in the summer. Given his academy background, selling Longstaff would provide Newcastle with a pure profit.
Stay: Alexander Isak
Isak is in sensational form, with 18 goals in his last 18 appearances. Though there has been interest from Arsenal and speculation of a £150m price tag, he is unlikely to leave this window. Newcastle may even offer him a new deal at the end of the season.
Could leave: Miguel Almiron
After his emotional farewell following the win at Southampton, it looks like Almiron is nearing a return to former club Atlanta United, despite Howe insisting a deal isn’t certain.
