The one advantage Leeds United have over Bayer Leverkusen in race to sign Emi Buendia – opinion

Emi Buendia has been heavily linked with a move to Leeds United this month, as Daniel Farke looks to bring in a new no. 10 to provide competition for Brenden Aaronson at Elland Road.

However, recent reports have emerged over the weekend suggesting that Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen are also keen on securing a deal for the Argentina international, who has seen limited playing time at Villa this season.

That was until Unai Emery decided to start Buendia in Villa’s recent Champions League match against Monaco, where he was one of the standout performers, despite Villa losing 1-0.

Graeme Bailey told LeedsUnited.News that there is a “good chance” Leeds could land Buendia. The club is reportedly waiting until the final days of the transfer window to make their move and secure the Argentine.

Leeds’ Potential Edge Over Leverkusen in the Buendia Race

While Buendia is reportedly interested in a move to Leverkusen, given their Champions League involvement and second-place position in the Bundesliga, Leeds might have an advantage. According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, Leeds are willing to pay up front for Buendia before the February 3 deadline.

In contrast, Get German Football News reports that Leverkusen has a transfer budget of just £17m this month and are only looking to sign Buendia on loan. This could prompt Villa to prefer a sale to Leeds instead.

Daniel Farke’s Past Comments on Buendia

When recently asked about Leeds’ interest in Buendia, Farke declined to comment on players from other clubs but did praise his former Norwich City playmaker. After Buendia scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Swansea in 2020, Farke described him as having “unbelievable quality” and expressed how pleased he was to have him in the team.

It remains to be seen whether Leeds can close a deal to reunite Farke with Buendia. While competing with Leverkusen is a tough challenge, if Leeds follow through with their intentions, a deal could be possible.
