David Moyes has talked sense on Everton issue – the Friedkin Group and Kevin Thelwell must deliver

David Moyes has already addressed the need to strengthen Everton’s squad with new signings this month, but emphasized: “If the player isn’t going to improve the team, then there’s no point in spending money.”

Bringing in new players brings fresh energy to Finch Farm and raises competition levels, which benefits everyone. It also motivates existing players to raise their standards, which is a healthy dynamic.

However, January is always a challenging window, and in the past, Everton has sometimes been guilty of signing players just to increase squad numbers, without necessarily improving the team.

The goal should be to sign players who can step straight into the starting XI. Recruitment should focus on bringing in players good enough to make an immediate impact.

Moyes’ approach is rooted in common sense, though whether this can be achieved is another question.

Adding a player who will primarily sit on the bench or be loaned out won’t increase competition or push players to perform at their best.

There’s a clear desire to improve, and the new manager seems to have a clear vision of where reinforcements are needed. Now, it’s up to Kevin Thelwell and the recruitment team to identify suitable targets, and whether the Friedkin Group can fund these acquisitions before the window closes. Hopefully, new signings will come through by the end of January, though I’m also confident that Moyes can extract more from the current squad than what we’ve seen so far this season.
