‘Our trigger’: Antoine Semenyo shares the Newcastle weakness Bournemouth already ‘knew’ about

Newcastle United were soundly beaten by Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, suffering a 4-1 defeat at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe’s side were fortunate not to lose by an even wider margin, with Bournemouth hitting the post and having a goal disallowed. A crucial save by Martin Dubravka helped Newcastle avoid an even greater humiliation against Howe’s former club.

After some impressive recent performances, this result served as a harsh reality check for Newcastle. Key players like Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon struggled, while the team’s defensive efforts were underwhelming.

Despite missing several key players, Bournemouth took full advantage of Newcastle’s weaknesses, delivering a dominant performance. Antoine Semenyo, a standout for Bournemouth, revealed how their scouting of Newcastle’s game plan helped them secure the win. He explained that Bournemouth knew Newcastle would try to play out from the back and made sure to press when the goalkeeper passed to the center-backs.

“We knew they had moments when they’d keep it at the back and we wanted to catch out the back four,” Semenyo said. “As soon as the goalkeeper passed to the centre-back, that was our trigger to go and it worked out perfectly.”

Frustration was evident among Newcastle’s players, with Gordon visibly upset about the defenders’ distribution, signaling the team’s collective disarray during the match. This defeat was a harsh reminder of the challenges still facing Newcastle.
