‘Crazy’ – Deeney in total disbelief at ‘Mental’ recent Everton contract decision

Troy Deeney has described Everton’s decision to give David Moyes a two-and-a-half-year contract to replace Sean Dyche as “mental.”

Speaking on talkSPORT (16 January, 1:22pm), Deeney expressed confusion over why The Friedkin Group didn’t opt for a shorter-term appointment, especially with a transformational summer on the horizon for the club.

Deeney argued that the Toffees’ move to the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium later this year presents an ideal opportunity for a fresh direction. He viewed Moyes’ reappointment as driven more by “nostalgia” than a strategic plan.

He said: “I thought the two-and-a-half years [contract] was mental, I thought that was crazy. I understood a ‘six months until the end of the season and then let’s revisit,’ especially with 13 players out of contract in the summer.

“It’s all nostalgia—that’s the only reason they’ve gone back to Moyes. If it wasn’t him, who else would they get? It’s a fantastic opportunity for someone this summer—new stadium, new ownership, a complete rebuild. But right now, it’s just nostalgia.”

Everton caught between the old and new eras with Moyes’ return

Although a new era is on the way, nostalgia has certainly played a role in Everton’s decision, with several former players praising Moyes’ return.

There’s no question that Moyes had a successful first stint, elevating Everton from relegation candidates to consistent European contenders during his 11 years at the club. However, he returns with Everton once again fighting relegation, and the two-and-a-half-year contract signals that the Friedkin Group see him as part of their long-term vision.

The Friedkins likely wanted to avoid alienating fans by offering a short-term deal to a club legend like Moyes, while the 61-year-old himself would have preferred more security with a longer contract. However, should Moyes barely steer Everton to safety without improving the team’s style of play, the Friedkins may face an even bigger backlash if they part ways with him in the summer.
