£9.3m Nottingham Forest player just forced Marinakis into January U-turn with his Luton display – opinion

Nottingham Forest gave several squad players a chance to impress in their 2-0 FA Cup victory over Luton Town, with the team seizing the opportunity to showcase their skills.

The win secured Forest’s place in the fourth round of the FA Cup, further boosting the momentum of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. Goals on either side of halftime, including a rare strike from Forest Academy graduate Ryan Yates, ensured a comfortable win at the City Ground.

Espirito Santo would have been particularly pleased with the performances of his backup players, especially Carlos Miguel, who made six saves to help secure a fifth consecutive clean sheet for his team.

One standout performance came from Ramon Sosa, who started ahead of Callum Hudson-Odoi. Sosa immediately posed a threat to Luton with his dribbling skills and provided a pinpoint assist for Yates to score the opening goal. He later added a goal of his own after Jota Silva broke through the Luton defense and found him for a simple finish.

Sosa, who joined Forest from Talleres in the summer for £9.3 million and has only made one Premier League start, put in a performance that could earn him more first-team opportunities moving forward. His display against Luton could also lead Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis to reconsider his plans for the January transfer window, particularly in terms of adding another winger.

Marinakis had originally considered signing three players, including a winger, but Sosa’s goal and assist, along with Silva’s contribution on the right wing, may lessen the urgency for a new wide player. While Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga remain Espirito Santo’s first-choice wingers, Marinakis could now prioritize strengthening other areas of the squad rather than adding another backup to the wide positions.

Given Taiwo Awoniyi’s struggles in the cup tie, Forest should focus on reinforcing other positions while trusting Sosa and Silva to provide reliable support when needed.
