Graham Potter’s appointment as West Ham United’s new manager was “slightly delayed” after the former Chelsea boss engaged in additional talks with Everton, according to Rob Dorsett.
The 49-year-old was pursued by both Everton and West Ham, but ultimately, it was the Hammers who secured his services. Potter is expected to lead West Ham in their upcoming FA Cup match against Aston Villa on 10 January.
In his live blog for Sky Sports (9 January), Dorsett provided a new update on the situation. He wrote, “The negotiations and appointment were delayed slightly as Potter and his representatives held further discussions with Everton, who were also interested in him. However, those talks were mutually ended, allowing Potter to proceed with West Ham.”
Everton missed a significant opportunity with Graham Potter. While Sean Dyche is known for his Premier League survival expertise, it seems Everton would have been better off with Potter at the helm.
The 2024/25 season has been a tough one for Everton, with their attack lacking cohesion and their top scorer managing just three goals. Though some of their struggles can be attributed to underperforming strikers like Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, it seems Potter could have injected fresh energy into the team.
However, with Potter now in charge at West Ham and aiming to elevate them to at least the top half of the table, Everton’s loss is evident. Dyche’s contract ends at the season’s conclusion, and it’s likely that The Friedkin Group will bring in a new manager next term. Missing out on Potter is undoubtedly a significant setback for the Toffees.
