Chris Sutton was left stunned by what a Leeds United fan said about Ilian Meslier being linked with Manchester United.
The Whites’ goalkeeper could be set to exit Elland Road in the January transfer window with GiveMeSport reporting (29 December) that the Premier League outfit are interested in gaining the 24-year-old’s services.
However, losing their goalkeeper may not upset many Leeds fans after another poor performance from Meslier on Saturday (4 January) as Hull City came back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with the Whites.
Speaking live on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 (5 January, 19:41pm), a Leeds fan rang up and stated: “Hull yesterday, 3-1 up 81 minutes absolutely shocking howler.
“Time to let him go. Rumour has it Manchester United want him, I’ll drive him there myself.”
Sutton was stunned by the claim as he responded: “What? Where did you hear that rumour?”
Leeds United need to secure Ilian Meslier exit
It’s not often that a player draws interest from a higher league and fans are urging the player to go with the view that it would improve their own prospects.
However, Meslier isn’t good enough on a consistent basis for the Whites and offloading him and bringing in a new number one could certainly prove to be the difference between promotion and staying in the Championship for Daniel Farke’s side this term.
Although the West Yorkshire outfit still occupy the top spot in the Championship, dropping two points against Hull on Saturday in the manner that they did could come back to haunt them at the end of the campaign with things very tight at the top of the table.
The fact Sutton was left so shocked at the thought that a Premier League side would be looking to sign the 24-year-old during the January transfer window speaks volumes about the levels he’s performing to at Elland Road.
Therefore, if Leeds can offload him they will surely feel as though they have come out of the deal on the better end of it.
