Wolves will hope the January transfer window can aid them in their push for Premier League survival this term.
It’s been a mostly horrific start to the season but since Vitor Pereira was named the new Wolves manager, the Old Gold have been trending in an upward direction.
Wins over Leicester City and Manchester United along with a last-gasp point against Tottenham have seen Wolves escape the bottom three for the first time since matchday 12.
Supporters are loving the fresh energy Pereira has brought to Molineux, with the players responding positively to the change in management.
However, the 56-year-old’s depleted squad need help to keep their head above water as Wolves aim to sign two defenders this month.
One of those could be a Brighton centre-back, and Jamie Carragher once handed him a glowing endorsement.
Jamie Carragher’s praise for Wolves target Adam Webster
That player is Adam Webster, who the Old Gold have had placed on their shortlist for a while.
Wolves tried to sign Webster in 2022 before interest in the 29-year-old emerged in October when Gary O’Neil was eyeing defensive reinforcements.
Now, it has been revealed that Wolves remain interested in Webster who has played just 80 minutes in the Premier League under Fabian Hurzeler.
The Englishman is out of favour under the German, prompting transfer speculation over his future with former Liverpool defender Carragher once full of praise for the Brighton man.
Speaking in August 2021 after the Seagulls beat Watford 2-0, Carragher said via the Daily Mail: “Adam Webster really stuck out for me. All the back players – I actually think Lewis Dunk is underrated in terms of him on the ball as well – they can play.
“They have to play from the back if they want to play for this [Brighton] team. Most centre-backs now, coming through or playing in the Premier League you have to be good on the ball and that was a real standout in the game, that’s what stood out for me.”
Webster ticks all the boxes for Wolves
The above comments will fill supporters with confidence if Wolves fully pursue a deal for the ex-Bristol City defender who Brighton signed for £20m in 2019.
This is largely because of his Premier League experience, amassing 127 appearances in the competition, but also his incredible metrics.
In terms of being comfortable in possession and driving out of defence, the above statistics reinforce Carragher’s praise for the Seagulls star as he’s able to match some of Europe’s best in his position.
Indeed, if Wolves do manage to sign Webster, they will be getting an all-round solid defender who can slot perfectly into their back three.
