Manchester City are enduring their toughest ever patch under Pep Guardiola, after the club slipped all the way down to 6th place of the Premier League. Leeds United meanwhile are going steady in the Championship, still sitting in 1st.

There are just 14 teams standing between Manchester City and Leeds United in the English football pyramid right now. And if Daniel Farke’s side carry like they have in the first half of the season, they’ll be joining City in the Premier League next season.

And there might even be a bit of business between the two sides with Leeds United previously linked with Kalvin Phillips, who’s bound to leave the Etihad on a permanent deal at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Before then, however, we could see City swoop in for a player who Leeds United have been quite heavily linked with in the build up to January: Abdukodir Khusanov. Recent reports went as far as claiming that Leeds have tabled a £16.5million bid for Khusanov at RC Lens.

Manchester City ‘well informed’ in race to sign Abdukodir Khusanov

Khusanov is one of the most highly-rated young centre-backs in European football right now. The Uzbekistan international has featured 13 times in Ligue 1 this season and has been linked with the likes of PSG, who he went up against in his last outing.

Leeds’ chances of signing Khusanov have been played down, inevitably. Now, journalist Fabrizio Romano has made the chances of Khusanov arriving at Elland Road even more unlikely, revealing City’s keen interest.

Romano posted on X: “Manchester City add RC Lens centre back Abdukodir Khusanov to their list for January.

“There are several top clubs interested in 20-year-old centre-back as he’s considered one of the best talents in his position. Race open, Man City are well informed.”

Leeds United have their sights set on another centre-back

There’s been no shortage of centre-backs linked with moves to Elland Road during this January transfer window, with Khusanov one. Others include Ben Godfrey and Christopher Wooh, but it seems like Leeds might be most keen on another name.

Leeds are linked with Nico Elvedi who currently plays for Borussia Monchengladbach, Farke’s old employers.

And it’s thought that Leeds are in pole position to sign Elvedi who’d be available for as little as £8million, making him a much cheaper and much more realistic signing than someone like Khusanov, who could command anywhere upwards of £20million.

Now with City keen, it feels like Khusanov to Leeds isn’t going to materialise, whether they’ve tabled a bid or not.
