VILLA TARGET MATETA AS STRIKER SEARCH INTENSIFIES

August 4, 2024

Aston Villa have identified Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta as a potential summer signing, as Unai Emery seeks to bolster his attacking options.

According to sources, Villa have made contact with Palace to discuss a possible move for the 27-year-old Frenchman, who has impressed with his recent form under Oliver Glasner.

Mateta’s resurgence since Glasner’s arrival in February has been nothing short of remarkable, with 13 goals in as many games making him one of the most in-form strikers in the Premier League.

Villa’s interest in Mateta is understood to be genuine, with Emery seeking a replacement for Jhon Duran, who has been linked to West Ham United. Romelu Lukaku, another target, has rejected an approach in favor of a move to Napoli.

Mateta’s versatility, offering a strong box presence and the ability to play out wide, makes him an attractive option for Emery. Palace, however, are keen to retain their prized forward and are in talks with him about a new deal.

With Mateta’s contract running until 2026, Palace are in a strong position to negotiate. Glasner values Mateta’s contributions and wants to continue developing his goalscoring prowess.

Villa are also considering other options, including Maximilian Beier, who has a release clause of around €30 million. However, Mateta’s recent form and versatility make him an enticing prospect.

As the transfer window heats up, Villa’s pursuit of Mateta adds another layer of excitement. Will Palace be able to retain their forward, or will Mateta make a move to Villa Park? Only time will tell.

PALACE DETERMINED TO KEEP MATETA

Crystal Palace are determined to keep Mateta, with Glasner praising his “exceptional” form. “Jean-Philippe has been incredible since I arrived,” Glasner said. “He’s a key player for us, and we want to keep him.”

VILLA’S STRIKER SEARCH

Villa’s search for a new striker has been ongoing, with Emery seeking a player who can provide a clinical edge. Mateta’s record of 13 goals in 15 games makes him an attractive option.
