West Ham United are setting their sights on a top European defender to partner with newly-signed Max Kilman, in a move that could bolster their backline and alleviate concerns over last season’s porous defense.

While many fans may argue that a striker is the priority, others believe that pairing Kilman with one of the defenders who conceded 74 Premier League goals last season would be a recipe for disaster. The Hammers have already targeted exciting centre-backs like Todibo and Tomori, but failed to secure their signatures.

Now, according to Claret and Hugh, West Ham are turning their attention to Lens defender Kevin Danso. French and Italian media have linked the East London side with the Austrian international, who has impressed in France over the past three seasons. With Lens willing to let him go for a bargain €25 million, it’s no wonder West Ham are interested.

However, they face competition from Atalanta, who are reportedly leading the race for Danso’s signature. One factor that could work in West Ham’s favor is that Danso would be classed as a homegrown player due to his development years in England, making him an even more attractive prospect.
