Liverpool’s pursuit of West Ham star Mohammed Kudus this summer hinges significantly on the influence of their assistant coach, John Heitinga. The Reds are reportedly eyeing the 23-year-old, who could command a hefty fee due to an £85 million release clause.

Heitinga has played a pivotal role in Kudus’s career, having coached him during their time together at Ajax and then reuniting at West Ham last year. Despite Heitinga’s departure from the London club following David Moyes’ exit, the Dutchman is now part of Arne Slot’s coaching setup at Liverpool.

Kudus has spoken highly of Heitinga’s impact on his development, particularly during their tenure at Ajax. “I felt very good under Heitinga. He is the best trainer I have had at Ajax,” Kudus remarked, emphasizing the coach’s influence beyond training sessions. Their relationship continued to flourish during their brief stint together at West Ham, where Kudus praised Heitinga’s efforts in improving the squad.

“He is a top trainer, and I really appreciated his efforts to make the players better at the time,” Kudus added, reflecting on Heitinga’s immediate impact when he assumed coaching responsibilities at West Ham.

The Ghanaian international enjoyed a stellar season with West Ham, contributing 14 goals and six assists across 45 appearances. Amidst interest from various Premier League and European clubs, including Liverpool, new Liverpool head coach Julen Lopetegui views Kudus’s versatility as a valuable asset.

Liverpool’s interest in Kudus is compounded by their need for a winger, although his ability to adapt to a central role adds further appeal. Should Slot decide to pursue Kudus, Heitinga’s familiarity and positive influence could prove pivotal in securing the player’s signature.
