Nottingham Forest are ramping up their efforts to bolster their squad ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign. With Dan Ndoye already on board from Bologna, the Reds are expected to make further signings in the coming weeks.
After losing Anthony Elanga to Newcastle, Forest have secured Morgan Gibbs-White’s services for another season. Now, they’re targeting new talent to strengthen their midfield. According to The Telegraph, Forest have held talks over a potential move for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Fernandes, valued at around £30m, suffered relegation with the Saints last season but impressed with his performances. Russell Martin, his manager at Southampton, praised Fernandes, calling him “amazing” during a tough campaign.
The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder would be a great addition to Forest’s squad, providing a useful alternative to Douglas Luiz, who’s been linked with a move to the East Midlands. Fernandes has plenty of time to develop, making him a valuable asset with considerable resale value.
One notable incident from last season saw Fernandes fall to the floor unchallenged and win a free-kick from Anthony Taylor, who believed Gibbs-White had fouled him. The moment infuriated Gibbs-White, who directed his anger towards the referee.
If Forest can agree a fee of £30m, Fernandes would be a superb addition to the squad. With ongoing talks, Forest fans will be hopeful that a deal can be struck, strengthening their team’s chances in the upcoming season.
