Sunderland FC’s long-awaited return to the Premier League is finally here, with the Black Cats set to take on West Ham United at the Stadium of Light on August 15th. With a slew of high-profile signings, including Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki, manager Regis Le Bris will be hoping his new-look squad can get the season off to a winning start.
One area of concern for the Black Cats could be up front, where 13-goal hero Wilson Isidor lacks Premier League experience. Perhaps, then, signing an experienced striker who knows the division inside out could be the key to ensuring safety. One target who fits the bill is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, the former Everton striker who’s currently a free agent.
Calvert-Lewin has amassed 239 Premier League appearances, scoring 57 goals along the way. At one point, he was valued at £80m by his former club, and his knowledge of the division has caught the eye of Manchester United and Newcastle United. However, Sunderland could offer him more regular game-time, which might just tempt him to join the Black Cats.
Interestingly, Calvert-Lewin has been described as “sensational” by football journalist Connor O’Neill and a “monster” in front of goal by talent scout Jacek Kulig. If he can overcome his injury issues and recapture his form, he could be the spark that steers Sunderland away from relegation.
Calvert-Lewin’s profile is reminiscent of Jermain Defoe, the former Sunderland striker who led the line with class during his time on Wearside. Defoe’s goalscoring heroics are still remembered fondly by Sunderland fans, and if Calvert-Lewin can bring a similar level of experience and know-how to the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats might just find themselves exceeding expectations in the Premier League. With his Premier League pedigree and goalscoring prowess, Calvert-Lewin could be the Defoe-like figure Sunderland needs to succeed.
