Wolves Target Former £17m Wonderkid After Breakout Season- And Fans Are Convinced He’s a BIG Upgrade on Matheus Cunha!

Wolverhampton Wanderers are stepping up their search for attacking reinforcements this summer, and they have set their sights on Willem Geubbels, a once-hyped French talent who is regaining form in the Swiss Super League. Geubbels has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence with St. Gallen, scoring 14 league goals in the 2024/25 campaign, matching the tally of Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, and adding three more in cup competitions.

The 23-year-old’s potential and talent were recognized early in his career, and he made history with Lyon by becoming the first player born in the 21st century to feature in both Ligue 1 and the Europa League. His impressive abilities caught the attention of AS Monaco, who invested around £17 million to secure his signature in 2018. Despite facing injury setbacks and limited opportunities at Monaco, Geubbels has revived his career at St. Gallen, and his form hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Several clubs are tracking Geubbels, including Bundesliga sides Union Berlin and FC Cologne, Premier League clubs Southampton, Sheffield United, and Leeds United, as well as Dutch side FC Twente. St. Gallen are reportedly bracing for his departure, with a fee in the region of £8.5 million likely to secure a deal. The Swiss side views it as “almost impossible” to retain him given the rising interest across Europe.

Geubbels is described as a versatile forward with explosive pace, sharp finishing, and strong 1v1 skills. He is particularly dangerous on the counter-attack and adept in the air. Although he’s primarily a central striker, he has also been deployed on the left, offering tactical flexibility. These traits could make him an ideal replacement for Matheus Cunha, who often operated across the frontline for Wolves.

With Cunha’s departure to Manchester United, Wolves are in need of a potent forward to fill the creative and goal-scoring void. Manager Vitor Pereira’s summer rebuild is expected to include the addition of two creative attacking midfielders, and Geubbels could slot into a left-sided No. 10 role, providing Wolves with both pace and unpredictability in the final third. With Geubbels’ stock rising once again and multiple clubs circling, Wolves face a competitive pursuit. However, the relatively modest fee and the player’s versatility may make him an attractive and realistic target for the Premier League side.
