Everton were left dangerously exposed after Beto’s deadline-day departure, with Thierno Barry currently the only recognised striker available to lead the line. Moyes has built his reputation on organisation, discipline and getting the maximum from his players, but even the most carefully constructed squad can struggle when there is a shortage of reliable firepower. And that is precisely why the name Mauro Icardi has suddenly become so intriguing around Goodison Park.
ICARDI COULD BE EXACTLY WHAT EVERTON NEED
At 33, Icardi is no longer the explosive young striker who terrorised defenders during his best years in Italy. But judging him purely on age would overlook the most important quality he could bring to Everton — his instinct inside the penalty area.
Icardi has spent his career developing into a striker who knows where to be before the opportunity arrives. He does not necessarily need ten chances to score one goal. Give him the right service and he has historically possessed the movement, positioning and finishing ability to punish defensive mistakes.
For an Everton side suddenly short of attacking options, that experience could prove priceless.
The Toffees do not necessarily need another project. They need someone capable of stepping into the team and immediately understanding what is expected of him.
And Icardi could provide precisely that.
DAVID MOYES NOW HAS A MAJOR CALL TO MAKE
Reports from Argentina recently suggested Everton were considering making contact with Icardi’s representatives, although there has been no confirmed agreement between the player and the club.
At the same time, the situation appears to be moving quickly elsewhere.
Sky Sport Italia reporter Manuele Baiocchini, via Gianluca Di Marzio, reported that Lazio could be closing in on the striker, with Icardi due to hold discussions with Lazio manager Gennaro Gattuso.
Those conversations could ultimately determine whether Everton still have an opportunity to make their move.
If Icardi remains available, Moyes and Everton’s recruitment team will have to decide whether the potential reward outweighs the obvious risks.
THIS COULD BE EVERTON’S WILDCARD
There is certainly an argument that Everton should explore the possibility.
The club already knows its biggest problem: attacking depth.
Beto has gone. Barry is left carrying much of the responsibility up front. Injuries, suspensions and dips in form can quickly turn a manageable squad problem into a serious crisis.
That is where a player like Icardi becomes interesting.

Everton must decide whether to act while the striker remains available or accept that their current options will have to carry them until January.
MOYES MUST DECIDE WHETHER TO TAKE THE GAMBLE
For Moyes, this is not simply about signing a famous name.
It is about whether Icardi can still contribute at the level Everton require.
There would naturally be questions surrounding his age, fitness, adaptation and recent form. But there is another question that may be even more important:
Can Everton afford to go into the season with so little recognised striking depth?
That is the dilemma facing the manager.
