Tottenham Hotspur are refusing to give up on signing Sandro Tonali as Roberto De Zerbi looks to reshape his squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
The North London club have identified the Italian midfielder as one of their leading transfer priorities after his outstanding performances for Newcastle United last season.
Spurs recently saw an opening bid in the region of £80 million turned down, with Newcastle standing firm on their valuation of more than £100 million. The Magpies have made it clear they have no intention of parting ways with one of Eddie Howe’s most trusted players.
Tonali once again proved his importance at St James’ Park, featuring in more than 50 matches across all competitions. The former AC Milan star excelled with his composure in possession, passing range, defensive awareness and ability to control the rhythm of games from midfield.
While Tottenham remain focused on landing the 25-year-old, De Zerbi is also eager to reinforce his attacking options before the transfer window shuts.
One player who continues to feature prominently on Spurs’ shortlist is Manchester City winger Savinho. Tottenham attempted to sign the Brazilian last summer but were unable to convince City to sell, with the winger instead committing his future to the Premier League champions.
However, circumstances have since changed, and reports suggest Savinho is now more open to making the switch to North London after struggling for regular opportunities last season.
Despite their continued interest in the Brazilian, Tottenham are exploring additional attacking targets.
According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà, Spurs are preparing moves for both Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush and Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo. The report claims the club hope to secure at least one of the two attackers, with plans to intensify their pursuit once a deal for Tonali is completed.
Pedullà adds that sporting director Johan Lange and chief executive Vinai Venkatesham are determined to back De Zerbi with major additions as Tottenham aim to bounce back from a disappointing campaign.
Marmoush has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking players thanks to his blistering pace, intelligent movement and direct style. The former Eintracht Frankfurt forward has also become a key figure for Egypt as Mohamed Salah enters the latter stages of his international career.
Gakpo, meanwhile, remains an important member of Liverpool’s attack despite increasing competition for places. The Netherlands international offers valuable versatility, operating either on the left wing or through the middle, and finished the 2025/26 season with more than 50 appearances, nine goals and six assists.
The Dutchman also carried strong form into the World Cup after scoring twice in a warm-up victory over Uzbekistan before continuing to impress for Ronald Koeman’s side, including a brace and an assist in the Netherlands’ emphatic 5-1 victory over Sweden.
Both players would bring different qualities to De Zerbi’s attack, giving Tottenham greater depth and tactical flexibility.
Signing either player is unlikely to come cheaply. Pedullà describes both deals as financially demanding, with Gakpo reportedly available for around €70 million, approximately £60 million, should Liverpool receive a suitable offer.
Marmoush could cost even more. Manchester City paid around £68 million, including add-ons, to sign the Egyptian and are expected to demand a fee that reflects that investment if they decide to entertain offers.
