Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Sandro Tonali has taken another dramatic turn, with fresh reports suggesting the midfielder has personally pushed for a move to North London.
While it has been widely claimed that Tonali has already agreed personal terms with Spurs, the biggest obstacle remains convincing Newcastle United to sanction the transfer.
The Magpies reportedly rejected Tottenham’s initial £80 million bid last week, but the Lilywhites have refused to back down. According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà, Spurs have now returned with an improved offer worth more than £100 million for the Italian international.
TEAMtalk reports that Tottenham have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to secure the deal and believe they have made significant progress in recent days.
A major boost has come from Tonali himself, with the midfielder reportedly informing Newcastle that he wants to join Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham project. His stance has strengthened Spurs’ belief that a breakthrough can be reached, with negotiations continuing as both clubs search for an agreement.
The report adds that Tonali has made his intentions clear to Newcastle’s hierarchy, encouraging Tottenham to intensify their efforts as they look to complete one of the summer’s biggest transfers.
However, Spurs are not alone in the race. TEAMtalk claims that Manchester City had been monitoring Tonali earlier in the transfer window, while Arsenal remain interested and could still make a move.
Those claims follow a BBC Sport report stating that Arsenal recently held exploratory discussions with representatives of both Tonali and his Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimarães, leaving the door open for further competition if Tottenham fail to wrap up the deal quickly.
