Rangers Could Secure Vaclav Cerny for Just £5m This Summer, Claims Ex-Aberdeen Chief
According to former Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness, Rangers are likely to finalize a permanent deal for Besiktas winger Vaclav Cerny for a fee in the region of £5 million this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Wyness suggested that the 28-year-old Czech international is “exactly the type of player” the Gers need right now, following an impressive loan spell at Ibrox during the 2024-25 campaign.
While recent speculation has indicated that Besiktas may look to recoup the £6 million they originally paid for Cerny, Wyness believes an offer of around £5 million could be enough to persuade the Turkish side to sell.
During his time at Rangers, Cerny contributed 18 goals and nine assists across all competitions, and a return to Glasgow this summer remains a distinct possibility.
New manager Derek McInnes, who took over after leaving Hearts, is now settling into life at Ibrox, with recruitment high on his priority list.
Cerny’s Scottish Premiership Know-How Viewed as Key Asset
Wyness, who served as CEO at Pittodrie from 2000 to 2004 and now advises top clubs through his consultancy firm, believes McInnes will place significant value on Cerny’s prior experience in the Scottish top flight.
Although Rangers’ loan move for Andreas Skov Olsen didn’t pay off as hoped in the latter half of the season, Wyness is confident that Cerny would not present the same issues.
On the latest Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, he described a potential return as a “very good move” for the club.
“I think they’ll get it done for around £5m,” Wyness said. “He’s exactly the kind of player they need—he has experience. McInnes will also appreciate his Premiership knowledge. He’s a quality player who performed well for Rangers.
“There may be some add-ons included, but I think £5m gets it over the line. It would be a smart piece of business.”
Rangers Willing to Bend Transfer Policy for Cerny
Earlier this week, Football Insider revealed that Rangers are prepared to make an exception to their usual recruitment strategy in order to bring Cerny back.
At 28, the winger would typically fall outside the club’s preferred age bracket, as they now focus on signing younger players with potential resale value.
However, the Gers are willing to overlook that rule for their former loanee, viewing his return as a major boost for the squad.
While Rangers are unable to spend heavily on Cerny, they remain eager to strike a deal if a bargain can be found.
