‘Best centre-backs in the league’ – Brighton boss breaks silence on Van Hecke to Tottenham

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler has broken his silence on Jan Paul van Hecke, following the defender’s high-profile switch to Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham are understandably thrilled to have finally secured the services of centre-back Van Hecke, who completed a £52 million move to north London.

Negotiating with Brighton proved no easy task—the Seagulls turned down multiple Spurs bids before the two clubs eventually struck a deal.

Van Hecke has already spoken about his desire to feature for Tottenham next season, though his immediate attention is fixed on representing the Netherlands at the World Cup.

Hurzeler praises Van Hecke after £52m Spurs switch
Spurs have every reason to be optimistic about their new Dutch addition. Van Hecke currently ranks among the top defenders in several key statistical categories compared to Tottenham’s current centre-back options.

He was also a cornerstone of a Brighton backline that conceded the third-fewest goals in the league last season, featuring in 36 matches.

Choosing Tottenham over Chelsea represents a significant coup for the club, and Spurs will be hoping he makes an immediate and lasting impression on their squad.

Brighton boss Hurzeler has now offered his thoughts on the departed defender, reflecting on his growth and the attributes that set him apart.

In an interview with talkSPORT, Hurzeler discussed Van Hecke’s development and his impact at the Amex, before admitting that the Seagulls will feel his absence.

He said: “Jan Paul has been outstanding for us. Through hard work, consistency, and an exceptional mentality, he developed into one of the league’s best centre-backs. As a club, we’re grateful for everything he gave to Brighton, and of course, we’ll miss him. I’ll miss him personally. We wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”

Tottenham target Sandro Tonali after defensive upgrades
Spurs aren’t resting on their defensive gains, with further squad strengthening clearly on the agenda.

Having already reinforced the backline with Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Van Hecke, Tottenham are now shifting their focus to midfield.

Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has emerged as their primary target, and progress is reportedly being made in talks between the clubs.

Spurs Web has learned that negotiations have begun over a deal for the Italian midfielder, who is valued at £100 million.

However, Tottenham’s opening bid of £80 million has already been rejected, meaning there is still considerable ground to cover before a deal can be finalised.
