Nick Powell Blasts VAR Over Martinez’s “Unacceptable” Tackle

Nick Powell has slammed VAR for not taking stronger action against Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, following his reckless two-footed challenge on Crystal Palace’s Daichi Kamada.

The Argentine centre-back escaped with a yellow card during United’s 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park on Saturday, but Powell believes Martinez was lucky to avoid a red card.

“That tackle is unacceptable,” Powell said on BT Sport. “VAR, what are you doing? You’re there to make the big decisions, and that’s a clear red card.”

Powell, a former Manchester United midfielder, questioned the consistency of VAR’s decision-making.

“How can you look at that tackle and not give a red card? It’s a reckless challenge, endangering the opponent’s safety. The intent is clear.”

Martinez’s tackle sparked controversy, with many arguing he was fortunate to have made contact with the ball rather than Kamada.

“The VAR checked for a potential red card and confirmed the referee’s call of no red card, deeming this a reckless challenge with no contact made,” the Premier League Match Centre stated.

Powell disagreed with the decision, emphasizing the potential consequences of such tackles.

“That tackle could have broken Kamada’s leg. You can’t have that in the game. The referee and VAR need to take responsibility and make the right call.”

Former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock also criticized Martinez’s tackle, labeling it “cowardly.”

United’s draw at Palace saw them squander several golden opportunities, with Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes striking the woodwork.

The incident has reignited the debate over VAR’s effectiveness and consistency in the Premier League.

“VAR needs to step up and make the big calls,” Powell concluded. “Players’ safety is paramount. Tackles like that can’t be tolerated.”
