According to Dharmesh Sheth, a well-regarded journalist, West Ham United are continuing their negotiations to secure the services of Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters.
The Hammers have been engaged in talks with Southampton regarding the acquisition of the England international, but as of now, an agreement on the transfer fee remains elusive.
Southampton is holding out for £20 million for the 27-year-old, whereas West Ham, mindful that his contract expires next season, are hoping to strike a deal for less.
Speaking to Givemesport, Sheth disclosed that discussions between West Ham and Southampton are ongoing, but a discrepancy in valuation persists. He stated, “They’ve been pursuing Kyle Walker-Peters for quite some time now.”
“Talks, I understand, are still open with Southampton, but there’s simply a gap between what West Ham are willing to offer and what Southampton are demanding.”
Vladimir Coufal has been a regular fixture as West Ham’s right-back, making 47 appearances across all competitions last season under David Moyes. He is likely to retain his starting role next season, but new head coach Julen Lopetegui might desire a strong competitor.
Ben Johnson, who didn’t receive enough opportunities to showcase his abilities ahead of Coufal, departed for Ipswich Town after his contract expired on June 30. Walker-Peters could potentially provide quality competition, ensuring Coufal doesn’t rest on his laurels.
Currently, the £20 million valuation appears steep for West Ham, who are keen to find a resolution soon. Southampton may reconsider their stance as August approaches, reluctant to risk losing Walker-Peters on a free transfer next year if he declines a contract extension.
Walker-Peters would represent a prudent investment. Last season, he boasted an impressive 91% pass completion rate and won 58% of his duels. A Tottenham academy product, he also averaged five recoveries per game and nearly two tackles won. His extensive Premier League experience of 115 appearances suggests he could seamlessly adapt to West Ham’s setup.
